I am often asked about leadership, everyone is looking for the silver bullet, the 3-step program, the perfect book to outlay the “how to”. Ironically this is exactly what leadership is not. We lead from the heart, from a grounded and honest sense of self, based on clear values, vision and courage.
Growing up my father read to me most nights, and my favorite books were Winnie the Pooh, so it is no surprise as an adult I would say one of my favorite books is The Tao of Pooh by Benjamin Hoff. It is a short read and addresses the core of leadership in a very insightful way. I must tell you in advance I don’t think it mentions the word leadership, nor does it present the “how to”, but instead invites you to turn inward and explore and discover the leader in you. Reflect on what is being presented, you will see it clearly.
Several principles are presented, beautifully blending the characters in the Pooh classics with the wisdom of the Tao Te Ching by Loa Tzu. A few of my favorites are:
Attitude – The painting of The Vinegar Tasters depicts three men standing around a vat of vinegar dipping their finger in to taste the vinegar (the vinegar represents the Essence of Life). The first’s expression is Sour, the second Bitter, and the third Harmony. We can choose how we experience life.
Knowledge vs Wisdom
Wu Wei – Not forcing or interfering with things, but let them work in their own way, to produce results naturally. Go with the Flow, and accept things as they are.
Uncarved Block – things in their original simplicity contain their own natural power
Inner Nature when relied on, cannot be fooled. But many people do not look at it or listen to it, and consequently do not understand themselves very much. Having little understanding of themselves, they have little respect for themselves, and are therefore easily influenced by others.
Believe in the power within us and use it.
Courage comes from caring and compassion, based on the heart
Wisdom, Happiness and Courage are not waiting somewhere out beyond sight, they are part of a continuous cycle that begins today.
Enjoy the journey of your life.
