Investing in Relationships

In the corporate world, Networking is Key, we hear it all the time, we may say it often and safe to say most everyone knows this.  However how to network and build strong relationships is not taught or even discussed.

When you go to a work social networking event are you thinking about who will be there, or maybe you have a goal to make a certain number of connections, or maybe you are targeting a specific upcoming project, or looking for leads?

I think it is safe to say these are fairly transparent and although many people are really good at this, it only gets you so far. Genuine relationships take effort; physically, mentally and emotionally, and take years to cultivate and build trust.

There is a lot of talk about the effects of relationships on our overall health and wellbeing. People who are involved in mutually satisfying relationships and are eager to learn about others, engage, and be connected, are healthier. There are multiple studies that tie friendships not only to longevity, but quality of life. Investing in friendships reduces our chances of heart attack, dementia, Alzheimer’s and helps keep us emotionally stable. It also builds a support network we can turn to when we have challenges and stress in our life.

We are not talking about a social media competition or reaching out when you need something the other person has. We are talking about investing the time and energy to build deep connections, engaging, listening, sharing, taking the risk to be vulnerable and genuinely caring about another human being.

I can say with confidence it is the best ROI you can get.
