Recently I completed a Neuroscience, Consciousness and Transformational Coaching program and I am currently in the certification process. How the brain works has always fascinated me, and coaching is all about looking at patterns in the brain and how we can create the shifts for improvement.
One of my favorite coaching quotes is “Only Nuns can change HABITS overnight.” This is unfortunately true; however, the quote “You can’t teach an old dog new tricks” is not. Neuroplasticity is the capacity of the brain to change, throughout our lives, and this is where coaching can make a significant difference in helping us recognize and make changes.
My focus in coaching is about Being versus Doing and creating more Self-Awareness. This very much aligns with the Right Brain, Left Brain, Whole Brain approach of Neuroscience Coaching. We often hear people refer to themselves, or others, as a right-brain or left-brain thinker, rarely a whole brain thinker. Society focuses on the “Doing”, associating it with productivity, while not placing a similar level of importance on the “Being.” Iain McGilchrist states this very eloquently, “The intuitive mind is a sacred gift (right brain), and the rational mind is a faithful servant (left brain). We have created a society that honors the servant but has forgotten the gift.”
